I thought this video from Twin Cities PBS appropriate for this blog for a number of reasons. One – This is a blog that focuses on the Civil War. It’s true that I am writing about the experience from a Confederate perspective (fictional) in an effort to explore the deeply seated, blood-thick racist ideology that was the cause of the bloodiest war on US soil, I am fascinated by all aspects of the immense sacrifice made by all during the war, especially by black soldiers who still haven’t received their due for their contribution to saving the Union.
Two – We should all take a moment to celebrate the history of pluck and bravery by all Minnesotans at this point and time. They beat back ICE at tremendous cost, and all of us on American soul, from the native born and the proud immigrant, owe them a debt of gratitude. To put a fine point on my stance on the current anti-immigration policy of this administration – FUCK ICE!
Three – Finally, this is Black History Month, and while this blog is in large part about the slavery and subjugation of black Americans, I want to take time to honor and give grace to those who contributed to their own freedom. I’ve tried to give a little taste of it in Horrible Harvest, but I recognize that I am a white southern male who cannot even come close to adequately conveying the perspective of a black man or woman, either during this period or now.
